Preparation Tips for Perfect Portraits
Dress to Impress
Choosing what to wear can be stressful and confusing, but it doesn’t have to be.
Colors:
• You can’t go wrong with neutrals and earth tones. If you’re not on Pinterest, go there…NOW. There are tons of outfit ideas for you and the whole family. There are even color palettes to choose from to take the guess work out.
• Stay within three color combinations.
• Avoid being too matchy-matchy. The dated solid color shirts with jeans (ie. all white tops, all black tops, etc.)
• Avoid crazy patterns. It’s not going to look flattering wearing a bold, bright, or floral print next to your child wearing plaid.
• Note: Bright prints tend to make the subject stand out and look bigger. This is ok with children.
Style:
• Dress up! Looking your best makes you feel good and gives you confidence. That confidence goes a long way in a photograph.
• If you insist on wearing jeans, make it up in the top with some pretty accessories (heels or dressy boots).
• Gentleman, nothing looks more masculine and sharp than great fitting clothes, closed toed shoes, (avoid sneakers and flip-flops) and being well groomed.
• Ladies, good shapewear, and high heels are your best friend. Clothes that fit in your correct size actually make you look slimmer and shapewear smooths imperfections and makes your clothes hang better on you. High heels not only elongate your legs, but they make you walk a little taller and more confident, which as I said before, shines through in your photographs.
• Accessories like hats and scarves can be great adding character and personality, but try not to go too
trendy. You want your photographs to remain timeless. Please avoid sneakers and ball caps.
Hair and Make-up
• Use natural lighting to apply your make-up more evenly. If your foundation is over done it will show in the photographs.
• I highly suggest using a good primer before you apply your foundation. It gives you a smooth canvas to work with and your foundation lasts longer.
• You want to emphasize your eyes. Apply your eye make-up a little heavier than your day to day routine. Natural color eye shadows tend to look best and don’t forget mascara or eye liner. If you want to really stand out, try false lashes. When you’re done you may feel ridiculous with how much you have on, but trust me, you’re going to be more pleased with your results after seeing the photos.
• Speaking of eyes, avoid shimmery shadows and glitter for photos. The camera can pick up light giving your eyes an undesirable look.
• As for your hair, I highly recommend clean and polished hair for all. Choose a hairstyle that is YOU and that is flattering to your face. Use products that will hold your look without looking stiff.
• Don’t forget, you’re never fully dressed without a smile. ☺
